How to Oil and Maintain your Wooden Chopping Board?

Maintaining a Wooden chopping board is essential to improve the life of the board. Follow the three simple steps mentioned below to maintain your Cutting board for the best performance.

1) Clean

Wash wooden chopping board with regular soap/gel. Rinse in hot water, wipe clean using a soft sponge/cloth.

Keep the wooden chopping board upright. This is to dry the board quickly and increase its life.

Tip: Never put the cutting board in the sink or inside water for a long-time, it will spoil the chopping board. It can result in warping, chipping, or create cracks on the board.

2Disinfect (Maintenance)

The Chopping Board needs Seasoning to be done once a month for best life and performance

Disinfect the board using pure white vinegar. Since Vinegar has a low pH value it completely destroys the bacteria. Note that any vinegar other than pure white vinegar may impart smells to your board that is undesired.

Follow the 5 Step process below to Season the Chopping Board:

Step 1: Wash your wooden chopping board with mild soap. Warm water is preferable, but normal water can be used as well. Natural dish soap can be used for cleaning.

Step 2: Wipe the board clean immediately after cleaning

Step 3: Allow it to dry for 2 hours. Place the wooden chopping board vertically after cleaning.

Step 4: Apply any cooking oil across the surface of the wooden chopping board using a soft towel or sponge. (Cooking Oil – Gingelly oil, Sunflower Oil, Coconut, etc)

Step 5: Set the chopping board aside for 3 hours to allow the oil to soak into the board.

 

3) Dry

After cleaning the Chopping board, the most essential part is to wipe it with a cloth. This part is often ignored, which can result in water entering the wood and causes wood fibers to swell and warps the board.

This is the reason why Wood should not be soaked in water. Never put your board in Dishwasher.

Wood needs special care than regular materials.

 

Best Practices – Key Tips for a Durable Cutting Board

Never place your wooden chopping board in the sink. Never place a wooden cutting board in the sink with other water & other dishes. Always wash your cutting board right away. Soaking the wooden chopping board in the sink will damage it. It can cause it to rot or bend.

Always Clean the board after cutting raw meat. Even after seasoning, a wooden cutting board might absorb food material easily. Meat juices can soak in, which might leave a bad smell. However, it can be removed by cleaning the board after each use. Never cut vegetables, fruit, or other materials using the board after cutting meat without washing the board first. It is a good idea to have separate boards for vegetables and meat to avoid cross contamination.

Always Hand washes only, No Dishwasher. Always hand washes your chopping board. Dishwashers are not good for wooden chopping boards. It might cause bending and damage.
